The Karaweik Hall is at the Karaweik barge. The barge is situated at the eastern edge of the royal lake or Kandawgyi where it is to be placed in full view of the great Shwedagon pagoda. The Karaweik is a kind of bird which can be found in the forest of the Himalaya mountain. It has the beautiful features , sweet and melodious voice. Myanmar people traditionally believe that it is mythical bird. In the legends, it can sing very sweet and melodious songs. In the olden days, the accent Myanmar made up the float just like the Karaweik to entertain at the royal occasion. For example, at the pagoda festival, the villagers made the float of Karaweik and put up in the Buddha image on it and it was towed around the village to be worshipped by the villagers. It was towed by the smaller oar boat called "Hlaw Gar". The boat moved without using machine power.
The Karaweik barge is one of the cultural heritage of Myanmar. In memory of cultural heritage, our government has built a Karaweik barge. The design is based on the "Pyi-Gyi-Mon" barge which is one of the royal barge during the era of our monarchs. It is so magnificent that all of the foreigners and tourists are amazed with wonder. The Karaweik barge is one of the architectural features. The construction design and all Myanmar architects are absolutely fine. The main objective in the construction of Karaweik hall is to revive and preserve our ancient Myanmar architecture . The construction perfect was started in 1972,June . With the exception of decoration of its head, the construction was completed in 1974,October 31st.The construction time lasted 18 months only. The present hall has as its base two mythical Karaweiks birds. The length of the Karaweik hall is 270' long and the breadth is 130' wide. The height of the roof is 130', the height of its head is 60'and that of the tail is 65'.The entire hall weights 20,000 tons.
In the Karaweik hall, the capacity and entertainment are really enjoyable. The hall is designed to seat for 1000 guests. It is decorated with wood carving. The southern hall is "Dakkina Hall" and the northern hall is "Uttara Hall". Each southern and northern hall is enough for about 300 peoples. It is used for wedding ceremony. In the evening, the Uttara hall is used as a restaurant with entertainment of karaoke. On the first floor, there is "Shwewah Hall". That Shwewah Hall is enough for about 70 peoples and it is used for engagement official meetings and conferences on the top floor, there is "Lawkanat Hall " for official and personal meetings and conferences. It is enough for about 50 peoples. From the window of the Lawkanat Hall , we can see the glittering Pagodas and Mahawizaya. Beside it can be hired for social occasions such as meeting, initiation ceremonies, receptions and any other special entertainments. Moreover we can get many kinds of dishes such as Chinese, European, Indian and Myanmar. I would like to express why the Karaweik Hall is one of the tourists attraction. It is situated on the beautiful royal lake. The most attraction is sunset when the glittering Shwedagon Pagoda is reflected in the calm water. It has also good location for sight seeing.
Our country has many interesting places like this. So, I want to say the foreigners to come to Myanmar and observe many wonderful places. We are warmly welcome from Myanmar!

Mood: http://www.traveltomyanmar.com/images/mku_htokekanthein1.jpg.
I would like to say about the yellowish substance which women of all ages and children coated their face. This is Thanahka. Thanahka is a Myanmar natural make up obtained from a tree which grows in central Myanmar in dry zone from Shwe Bo distinct.Thanakha plants also grown on dry, rocky soil.Thanakha plants that grow in the dry rocky soil produce hard, thin barks which are more fragrant and durable in use.Various of Thanakha differs in quality but those produce from Shwe Bo distinct and Shinmataung Thanakha from Pakoku distinct are the most famous in our country. The roots and barks of the trees are used in making a fragrant paste for cosmetic purpose. The paste can be obtained by grinding the bark on the circular stone slab, in circular motion ,adding a few drops of water from time to time. The color varies from pale yellow to yellow. The first item of procedure for a Myanmar women and girls in the morning is to prepare the thanakha paste to apply to her face and if time permits ,her body also with it before she go to work and outdoors or remains at home to do her daily chores. An extra paste of thanakha is applied to the cheeks in a decorative style. Gangaw pollens mixed with thanakha paste provided a golden glow on the cheeks of a girl. Myanmar women working at the field and construction sites applied a thick coating of thanakha on their faces to protect their face and skin from the sun.
Thanakha has an exhilarating effect on the besides keeping our body fresh, smooth and clean. Thanakha is fragrant and gives a cool refreshing feeling. By applying regularly, the skin will become fair, smooth anf soft.It protects the skin from sunburn, it prevents oiliness and wrinkles by tightening the pores. It also cures acne and pimples . Thanakha is a useful plant and it play a great part in the field of Myanmar indigenous medicine.Thanakha paste with a pinch of salt can cure on itchy rash. Thanakha can be applied to cool down the fever . The root possess much medicinal value and is used in Myanmar indigenus, laxatives. The hard yellowish thanakha wood is used to make handicrafts such as trinkets , combs , boxes and many others. The fresh paste of the bark is the most fragrant and the most preferred but commercial thanakha products such as Thanakha powder preserved thanakha paste and thanakha cakes made from grounded stems are also available for easy application.
Thanakha plants are naturally slow in growth and it takes three to ten year for the tree to growth two inches in diameter. Considering that a tree must be thirty five years to be mature enough to yield good thanakha, the commercial production is not an easy business. This is about Myanmar traditional cosmetic called "Thanakha". Our country has many interesting things like this .I will present many interesting festivals, foods, legends and most pleasurable places in Myanmar. Okay! Thank you for reading my articles. I wish all people can have great days everyday.

My Native town"Bago"
Posted on 4/25/2008 by

My native town is Bago. So, I want to describe about my town.Bago is 50miles north-east of Yangon and can be reached either by rail or by road.Going there by road is much more pleasurable than going by rail, because one can stop and see things on the way,and there is so much to see.
Bago is one of the places which a devout Myanmar Buddhist would not miss, for it is sanctified by the great Shwemawdaw pagoda, wherein, according to the legend the two sacred hairs of the Buddha were enshrined. Here again the names of the two merchant brothers,Taphussa and Phalika of the story of the Shwedagon, turn up ,as they always do,in most of the legends of the pagodas in this area. The merchant brothers brought the sacred hairs from India and enshrined them in the Shwemawdaw pagoda.Like most ancient cities in Myanmar,Bago is yet another Shangri-la,surrounded by legends and mythical characters who are seen in paintings and sculptures on the pagoda precincts and are very much alive and close to the people's hearts.
On the east of the hill,on which the Shwemawdaw pagoda stands, is a small hilllock, with a pagoda on top. There also stands on the hill a statue of two hintha birds, one perched on the other.Hintha is a mythical bird.
Like the crested lion one sees on the steps of pagodas, what might have been a common water bird is rhapsodized into a mythical creature, with ornamental crests and tails,a symbol of beauty and virtue.the hill is called Hinthagon, and the story runs like this:
Long Long ago,the place where Bago stands today was completely submerged in water. One day,at low tide,a small patch of land appeared above the sea.It was but a very tiny islet,so tiny indeed that there was not enough space for the two hintha birds soaring above to alight.
The male hintha bird landed first and his mate perched on his back.In course of time, the delta expanded and the patch of land became a hilllock,a historical landmark.
To this day, people say that any man who marries a Bago girl will be hen-pecked,a tradition established by the female hintha bird who perched on her mate's back.
This is the story of Bago to the best of my knowledge.I will present about Myanmar,if I have time.See you soon!

Myanmar's Water festival or "Thingyan"
Posted on 4/9/2008 by

All countries and races have their own traditional festivals. Our Myanmar country has many seasonal festivals,Among them,Thingyan is the most famous one.I 'd like to describe about Thingyan festival.I prefer to the foreigners and all Myanmars in foreign can feel about our Thingyan festival.
Thingyan comes when the summer's heat is at its peak.It is said that the festival period begins when the Thagyamin, the King of the Celestial Beings, descends from his abode to the earth. The astrologers, putting their heads together, calculates with most precision the actual hour, minute and second of the arrival of the Thagyamin to this earth and the actual time of departure to his abode. The legend says to wash away the evils of the old year and ushering in the New Year.
In days of our ancestors,we sprinkle scented water with sprig of eugenia leaves. It is customary for the youngsters to start throwing wate to passers-by or Akyonay or Thingyan Eve.Mostly at Thingyan time, the novitation and ordination ceremonies abound at the monasteries.Festival days are gazetted holidays, so some service personnel who took Thingyan vacation kept the sabbath and practised meditation at monasteries and meditation centers.
Many Yangonites joyfully celebrate Maha Thingyan going from pandal to pandal getting douses and drenched.Motorized revellers thronged around the famous pandals, where young damsels, standing in line, shoot jets of water to revellers ,who, jesting each other, danced to the rhythm oh Thingyan chants and music. In splashing water, some use bowls ,some use squirts or hand-pumps and some use tapered-nozzle hoses that are piercingly strong.
After a good dousing at a water-throwing pandal, the motorized revellers move on to another for an equally wet splash.Roads and streets were packed with revellers and there were traffic congestions along some roads.Even most modest girl would let go of herself and take daily outing during Thingyan period of 4 days.Young and not-so-young took part in the merry-making,going round the town. You will hear girls screaming 'eeks' and 'oohs' as ice water runs down their back.
On the rural scene, it is no less merry, but extravagance is low-key.The traditional "shwe-yin-aye",which translates as giving a cooling effect,is served. Its includes cooked glutinous rice,bread,agar-jelly,sweetened thin coconut milk with pieces of ice.The most popular is the "moant-lone-yay-bor" or the floating dough-ball.Rice dough with jaggery center is set down in the boiling water, when cooked well'the balls floating to the surface, are salvaged in a seive.
Serving people with eateries free is known as "Satudither".Film stars, artistes and musicians entertained the audience at the pandal. While the young and not-so-young revellers enjoy themselves, the elderly folks retire to the monasteries to keep sabbath and indulge in meritorious deeds. Some devoted young girls entered Sacred Order turning themselves into temporary nuns.
After 3 successive days of merry-making,we rang out of the old year at midnight on 16th,and rang in the new year with refreshing new feeling.WE should also shake off the woes of yesterday and look forward to happiness and prosperity in 1369Myanma Era.On the new year day ,meritorious deeds are performed through manicuring, shampooing of hair, bathing of the aged and freeing of fishes and cattle that are about to be killed.
Queues of damsels, waterpot on their heads, move towards the pagodas to give the image of the Buddha the New Year Day wash,as a gesture of ushering the New Year in.
Okay! My article is too long. Now all readers can see about the Thingyan festival.Wishing all the readers can have full of fun in your lifes.
